Changing Your Computer Sounds

You know your computer makes sounds for different events such as opening a program, receiving mail, and many others. Did you know you can choose the sounds you want it to make? When you're tired of the same old sounds, assign new ones!

1. Click the Start button,
2. point to Settings,
3. click Control Panel.
4. When the control panel opens, double-click Sounds.

The events that can have sounds assigned are listed there. Select an event, such as "Close Program." Events currently having sounds assigned to them will have a little speaker icon by them. The sound currently assigned to that event will be listed in the Name drop-down menu when you click it once to highlight it. To hear the sound assigned, click the Play button next to the Preview box. If an event doesn't have a sound assigned to it, you can assign one yourself.

To assign a new sound or change an existing assignment, click the event once to highlight it, and choose a sound from the Name drop-down menu (Windows comes with a few sound schemes), or click Browse to search for other sound files (WAV format) on your hard drive. When you select a sound, click the Play button to confirm it's one you want to use for a while, then click Apply to save the new setting.
