Netscape 7.0 - The latest Netscape browser is a colorful, fast and reliable program that boasts many features that other Web browsers can't. As with its predecessors, the package contains a fully functioning email package (Netscape Mail), a built in address book, Web site creator and now a nifty "My Sidebar" that allows you to view news, shares, weather, buddy lists and search on demand.

NeoPlanet - NeoPlanet is an excellent Web browser that combines an attractive interface with ease of use. Although based on Microsoft's Internet Explorer, the interface provides a refreshing change to the otherwise bleak gray toolbars. NeoPlanet also has a built in email program (contains everything you need) and can be customized with over 500 skins and personalized toolbars from their site.

Web Crafter - Web Crafter is a great freeware HTML editor for Windows 95 or later and features plenty of tools to aid in manual HTML coding. Toolbars with common functions, wizards, built in Web browsers and FTP client are all included here, plus a file explorer tool and color-to-HEX converter. The program and setup files are compressed in a zip file and requires a tool such as WinZip to open.

Internet Junk Buster - This program filters out unwanted banner adverts and blocks Web site cookies from entering your machine. Their Web site has detailed information about how people can invade your privacy while online. Read their "Alert on Primary", it contains everything you will need to know about protecting yourself whilst online, reading email or generally surfing the Internet.

Adobe Acrobat - A widely used program, ideal for distributing DTP documents over the Internet, or for compacting reviews, reports etc into an easy-to-read computer format. For another person to read the work you have created, they also must have the program that reads .PDF files. This can be downloaded in Windows and Macintosh versions, as can updates and official Adobe patches.

Hotbar - Here you can add a little color to your Internet Explorer toolbar. There are over 8,000 "skins" available to download plus the essential freeware program which will keep your bars in order. Visit the site regularly to keep up to date with the latest downloads. Note: you can't use Hotbar skins with NeoPlanet, they have their own compatible skins to download at the relevant Web site.

Microsoft Internet Explorer - Microsoft's most recent release of Internet Explorer "IE" has plenty of functions, is very user friendly and includes a customizable tool bar where you can add a remove browser buttons. Their favorites tool has been improved and now allows you to drag and drop sites into the menu without accessing a control panel, plus fully integrate your Windows Media Player.

IncrediMail - IncrediMail's bright and inviting Web site houses one of the Internet's most impressive freeware e-mail clients. This program closely focuses on the future of electronic mail by providing a clean, simple and interactive interface without compromising functionality. It also has every feature you would ever need: support for emoticons, voice messages, new mail notification, signatures, etc. 

Tera Term Pro - A slightly more advanced program that the telnet application provided with Windows. Tera Term Pro has a range of features such as shortcut keys, macro operators, history list of hosts and it's freeware, so it will never expire and is free to download . We've found it holds connections much longer than similar applications.

WS_FTP - Perhaps the most popular FTP package. It combines speed of use with reliability. Despite what many magazine reviews say, we have never had any problems with this nifty package. File extensions are shown and not the icon picture, which can be annoying at times, but it works. After transferring, a log is kept so you can see if an error occurs and what the problem was.

KaZaA - With over 300,000 registered KaZaA users online at any one time, you can be sure to find the files you are searching for. This well-established program offers a great combined Web/software interface and allows you to download most file types, including MP3s, by scouring "shared" folders of other users. Note: a prominent disadvantage of KaZaA is the amount of adverts in their program.

WinMX - By using WinMX, you can share files with millions of other people across the Internet. This particular program uses a decentralized peer network, and allows you to download (and share) sounds, videos, pieces of software and documents. We also find it very encouraging that this program does not include Spyware, or any other rogue attachments. It's even free of adverts.

iMesh - If it's reliability you're looking for, there's really no other file sharing program that can offer the functionality that iMesh does. Image files, sounds, videos and lots of other file types can be transferred from other iMesh users and subsequently shared from your machine as well. After giving iMesh a test run, we noticed that even if someone disconnects, your file will be partially saved.

IrfanView - Here's a cool freeware image viewer (for personal usage) that supports a wide variety of popular image formats, including GIF/ animated GIF, JPEG, BMP, FPX and many more. IrfanView features a "drag  n drop" facility, thumbnail tool, directory view mode, cut and crop tools, special effect implementation and to top that off, comes ready to run in a single and very handy EXE file.

ICQ (I Seek You) - ICQ (v 2001b) is a hugely popular, 4MB application that allows you to chat in real-time with other ICQ users and post instant text messages to them. Once registered, you'll receive a personal ID number that you can give to your friends, family and other ICQ buddies. Users can also send and receive files, play games and use the ICQ network to find relatives and friends.

Trillan - If you've ever had numerous messaging programs installed on your computer at once it can be extremely irritating when switching from one to another. Trillan solves this slight problem by providing a clever integrated program that can communicate directly with AIM, Yahoo! Messenger, MSN, ICQ and IRC. The latest version has many features, which can be seen at the developer's site.

Yahoo! Messenger - Yahoo!'s instant messaging application is one of the most widely used programs of its type and allows you to chat in real-time with users of the same program. Functions here include the ability to see when your "buddies" are online, send and receive files from other users, host private or public "conferences", voice chat, change font properties and much more.

AOL Instant Messenger - This was the Internet's first major instant messaging service. Now everyone online can access it, not just AOL subscribers. Using it, you can send and receive files, messages and even chat in real time. Features in the current version include the ability to play games online, receive text messages, share photos and host live conversations via voice chat.

mIRC - Here's a super popular client that utilizes IRC (Internet Relay Chat) and allows users of the service to communicate in real-time with people from all over the globe. Using mIRC, you can exchange text messages in an instant whilst being connected over a chat network. There are hundreds of useful features, more of which are explained in great detail at the official mIRC Web site.

MSN Messenger - The freeware messenger program from Microsoft Network has many functions in a small application. You can voice chat to anyone in the world (provided they have a copy of the program), share files, send pictures and have a text chats. If you use emoticons, MSN Messenger will automatically insert pictures to represent these. Note: includes a free USA dialing service.

ZoneAlarm - Download your own personal freeware firewall from the Zone Labs team. This program protects your computer from malicious hacker attacks, viruses and intruders. It will also notify you of any attempted break-ins and then advise you on how to deal with them. Includes 5 different modes that will run while you are working or browsing.
